Summary:
IDP’s architectural team led the regeneration of this former Silk Works (for the development of specialist Retirement Living apartments for the over 55’s) from initial feasibility to site delivery. Set in the historic market town of Leek, this unique site with public frontages throughout and set within a Victorian residential district, boasted very traditional architecture which required careful consideration. Our design response was contemporary, re-interpreting cues seen in the local context to deliver high quality apartments with generous levels of natural lighting. The scheme however, purposely revisits the traditional Victorian terrace, responding with a similar rhythm and proportion, but utilising contemporary material choice and detail.
Similarly, the scheme remains sensitive to its industrial heritage, whilst employing contemporary material and detailing choices; resulting in a beautiful Mill vernacular to the primary frontage. Further, we successfully retained and re-used a historic frontage of the former Silk Work to create a stunning combination of new and old. This re-use reinforces links to the sites industrial past and was welcomed by local officers and stakeholders throughout the planning process.
IDP’s architectural, heritage and landscape teams worked seamlessly together to develop this unique scheme, due to be operational in 2019.
