Andrew Leaver of IDP Group was appointed as delivery architect by the main contractor, Vinci Construction to lead the delivery design team.  The decision to appoint IDP came about when Grimshaw  were successful in winning a design competition staged by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The challenge was to take the project from RIBA stage D to completion. The striking building form and highly complex geometry presented numerous technical challenges for the team.

A fully glazed, curved concourse building with feature timber ceiling lining, external aluminium standing seam roof and feature brick plinth create a stunning environment for bus users. Passenger facilities including WCs and retail kiosks are located within the main concourse space behind a glazed feature brick curved wall.

A separate concrete framed building housing bus driver accommodation, bus operator offices over two floors and a ticket and information office is located adjacent to the main concourse building. The building is designed with high environmental performance standards, with exposed concrete walls and soffits and the means to naturally ventilate the spaces. The scheme is currently awaiting a final BREEAM assessment with a target of Excellent.
